Technology has made telecommuting one of the fastest trends in business. According to a new survey by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 22 percent of Americans now work from home at least part of the time. If that includes you, how does your home office look compared to the rest of your home? If the answer is “more woeful than woe,” then now’s the time to do something about it…starting with your floors. For inspiration, here’s how two homeowners—one in Texas, one in Nebraska—transformed their home offices into stylish havens that make working from home a beautiful thing to do each and every day.
When Donna Talley, founder and creative director of DT StyleWorks, relocated from New York to Dallas, she downsized to a small condo and decided to convert one of the two bedrooms into her home office.
“The room had really ugly carpet, so that was the first thing to go,” says Talley. “I wanted my office to have a European look so I chose Mannington’s French Oak 8” wide laminate planks. Each plank is filled with warm color and rich texture like floors in homes throughout the European countryside. French Oak laminate served as the inspiration for the overall design of the room. Yes, I designed from the floor up!”
Why laminate? Because it’s not only beautiful but durable and practical, says Talley. “I’m hard on floors so even though I placed a rug beneath my desk (a gorgeous flea market find she restored) and chair to protect the floor, I wanted a floor that’s as durable as possible.” Also, French Oak is pet-friendly (Talley’s cat is her office assistant) and easy-care. “It doesn’t show cat hair, dirt or dust as much as darker floors,” she adds.
Talley’s flooring pick makes perfect sense for her lifestyle. And like all Mannington laminate, French Oak laminate is up to five times more scratch resistant than wood flooring.
When Life on Virginia Street blogger Sarah Stewart decided to remodel the office she shares with her husband in their Omaha home, she also needed to replace worn carpet and factor in the presence of the family cats who liked to hang out in the office. “For a few year, we’d wanted to replace the office carpet with hardwood floors,” says Stewart. “The carpet wasn’t in great shape and had odd discolorations from buckling caused by the heavy desk we previously had. It was also loose at the entrance to the room.”
Stewart wanted flooring with a grain pattern similar to existing hardwoods found elsewhere in the house but in a lighter color, which would be easier to keep clean with the couple’s cats. “I fell in love with Mannington’s Maison Normandy Oak hardwood flooring,” she says. “Its 7” wide planks, matte finish and tones of color are perfect for the beachy vibe we love. And because it’s oak, I knew this floor would be extremely durable.”
With the home office remodel now completed, Stewart says her next step is to do everything she can to protect her new hardwood flooring, especially since she decided to swap out old office chairs for new ones on casters. “We plan to add mats under our chairs after learning that because hardwoods are a natural product, chairs on wheels can cause divots or indentations with prolonged use. We don’t want to take any chances with these gorgeous floors.”
