Over the past 100 years, Mannington has grown to be one of the largest manufacturers of fine flooring in the world. We’ve weathered 16 recessions, three devastating fires and two world wars to become one of the most trusted names in the flooring industry. What’s the secret to our success? While there are several, certainly at the top of the list must be our readiness to innovate and change with the times.
Flooring Design Then & Now
“When I started here in the late 1970’s, flooring was very colorful and decorative,” says Joe Amato, Mannington Vice President of Residential Styling. “Floors were filled with florals, bright hues and lots of graphic interest.” High gloss flooring was also very popular because increased shine implied that floors were exceptionally clean.
Now homeowners prefer more natural, authentic designs. “Looks that are very rustic, reclaimed or worn are popular now,” adds Amato.
For example…inspired by reclaimed wood from historic smokehouses, Smokehouse Hickory hardwood flooring has realistic saw marks and wire brush effects that dramatically bring out the wood grain. Mercado Oak laminate is a realistic hardwood look with subtle distressing and a hand-applied staining technique that creates remarkable character and variation from plank-to-plank. Filigree resilient replicates the look of vintage ornate metalwork with its weathered hand painted pattern and Whiskey Mill laminate is a modern rustic that takes its cue from aged oak barrels.
Marketing Then & Now
Mannington was among the first companies to team up with pop culture icons to promote product. Olympic champ Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn Jenner) got the crowd up & cheering. Dancer Juliet Prowse helped us get a leg up on the competition. Ed McMahon (the Tonight Show’s co-host and Johnny Carson’s side kick) made Mannington dealers feel like stars and motivated them to reach for the stars.
Now we promote our flooring on the internet which enables us to expand our reach globally. Mannington.com is the home for all things Mannington. Homeowners can learn about the attributes of our flooring and how it syncs up to trends by reading our “At Home” blog. We share hot product picks, new flooring introductions, videos and Mannington news on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Houzz and You Tube.
We’re also known to go with old school marketing now and then–like stopping traffic with a pop-up billboard. After all, 100 years of changing with the times is something to honk about.
